Lessons and Resources For Teaching How to Estimate Sums In Your Classroom Today!

A quick way to estimate the sum of two numbers is to round each number and then add the rounded numbers. It is likely that this won't be the exact answer but it may be close enough for some purposes.

Estimate the Sums

Students need this mental math not only for future math classes and math procedures, but it is also a life skill. Were you over charged at the furniture store? Did you receive the correct amount of change back from the waitress? Problem solving extends to all aspects of their world.

Tips to Introduce Your Lesson...

How to Estimate a Sum by Rounding:

Round each number in the problem.
Add the rounded numbers together, mental math is even better.

More reasons WHY you would use rounding to estimate the sum:

Check to see if you have about enough money to buy an item.
Get a ball park idea if they have a correct answer to a problem. Is 500 an intelligent answer for 23 + 31?

It can also be a folder cover for your students, give them a file folder with this cover and they can keep all the student sheets in the file folder to work on during math centers, morning work, or as a fast finisher activity. You can take a large piece of construction paper, 12 inches X 18 inches, fold it in half and use that as a "File Folder" to hold your students' work.

Page Two - This page is a Common Core poster for your math center, or classroom with the main focus of the lesson. It can also be used as a page in your students folder to explain the "Student Goal" ~ The "Why?" we are learning this skill.

I have no math problems on the cute little children's skin and hair, allowing your students to select any skin tone color and any hair color. The directions read, "You pick the color for any empty areas." This also allows for some creativity after their math is done by selecting additional colors of their choice for the borders and other blank remaining areas. There are many ways to use this Estimate Sums Resource, here are a few of my favorite ways:

Use one page as a game board, cut the other page. Place all those cards face down. Have the students turn over one card at a time, solve and place face up on the board. If they are incorrect, the card returns to the bottom of the pile. The winner is the student who places the final card. OR, for a "no winner" version, the goal is for the students to solve the cards independently, but to completely cover the board together. This version can ALSO be played two ways. One way is with the answer page as the game board, another way is with the math problem page as the game board instead.
You can also play this game with cutting all the cards and matching up the problems with the solutions.
For movement, place the problem cards around the room and the student(s) have to solve the math problem and leave the correct answer card at that location. Have a second student check the answers to extend the game.
Mix all the cards together, with two students, deal 5 cards to each student and then place the remaining cards face down. Use as a Go Fish card game!
Lay all the cards upside down on the floor and use as a Concentration (some call it Memory) Game!

Lesson Plan Ideas

Monday - Use page 6, the 15 Estimate Sums - Round to the Nearest Ten Only math problems, as a pre-assessment. Plan your small groups for the week around the data from this and your other observations.

Tuesday - Use page 7, the 15 Estimate Sums - Round to the Nearest Hundred Only math problems as morning work. Depending on the level of your boys and girls, they can complete the page alone, in pairs, or in a group. You can have the answer key on the board so that they are copying the correct answers as a very basic, low math level activity. OR Once the boys and girls are done, you, or a student, can project the answer key, covering up the problems and call them out one at a time, while revealing the answer. During math rotations, use page 3, the cute little boy reading and listening to his music with the Estimate Sums - Round to the Nearest Ten Only problems during the student seat work time.

Wednesday - During math rotations, use page 4, the cute, adorable, funky apple with the Estimate Sums - Round to the Nearest Hundred Only problems during the student seat work time.

Thursday - During morning work, classwork, small group instruction, or seat work, have the students complete page 5, the adorable, funky cupcake page with the Estimate Sums - Round to the Nearest Hundred Only problems. I wrote a previous post about these task cards that I will share here too. Number Patterns is a simpler and easier title that is trending now but still stands for the Commutative Property of Addition. 

Are You Teaching the Commutative Property of Addition?

If you're a third grade teacher, usually your first lesson is a review of the Commutative Property of Addition. I created a set of 24 task cards to use as a spiral review for third grade math teachers teaching how to use during the first month of school. Many teachers are working on procedures and routines during the first couple of weeks, students are moving in and moving out of your classroom and maybe your school has hired a new teacher to create smaller classrooms. No matter what, I think you can agree that the first week is crazy hectic. So I liked to have many resources for later in the month to review and revisit the many math skills I had to cover the first week.

Some Fun Ways To Create Excitement for the Commutative Property of Addition

Commutative Property of Addition Lesson Directions:
1. Write this problem on the board, or project on your overhead. 9 + 2 =
2. Have nine children stand to the left of the board and two children to the right. Have the children count all the students for the answer of 11.
3. Shift, write 2 + 9 = on the board and discuss that it doesn't matter in addition, the ORDER of the problem, just the total amount of items, the sum.
4. KEEP the same students in the two groups but have them shift to the left or right so the nine students are now on the right and the SAME two students are on the left. 
5. Discuss how the total number of students have not changed, and that we call this the Commutative Property of Addition. 
6. Repeat until every student gets a couple of turns at the board and in the audience.

For a Higher Level Class, or to Extend the Above Commutative Property of Addition Lesson:
1. Use 5 + 3= and have a group of five students on one side and three students on another side of the board. Using the "Count on..." strategy start with FIVE and verbalize, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT.... equals = 8. The students in the group of three could even raise their hands as you count on, Six, Seven, Eight.
2. Shift, write 3 + 5 = on the board and discuss that it doesn't matter in addition, the ORDER of the problem, just the total amount of items, the total amount of students.
3. KEEP the same students in the two groups but have them shift to the left or right so the five students are now on the right and the SAME three students are on the left. 
4. Discuss how the total number of students have not changed, and that we call this the Commutative Property of Addition.
5. Repeat these steps until every student gets a couple of turns at the board and in the audience.

Next Commutative Property of Addition Lesson:
To continue the lesson and go from a visual to a more concrete method, while still involving the students with some up and down, out of their chair, hands on, action. 
1. Using number cards, {click here for some FREE number cards} have one student hold the number 6 and another student hold the number 1.
2. Another student can write the problem, 6 + 1 = on the board.
3. Have the students continue to hold the cards, but change places. 
4. Write on the board, 1 + 6 = and discuss the Commutative Property of Addition. 
5. Give the students multiple chances to hold different number cards and write the problems on the board.

LESSON EXTENSION: 
1. Give the students in the audience white boards and markers to work out each problem.
2. In pairs, allow the students to write a problem, swap with their partner and have the partner solve and then use the Commutative Property of Addition to write the related addition sentence.

Are You Starting Your Fourth Grade Math Lessons?

Fourth Grade Math usually starts with an introduction of Place Value, Addition, and Subtraction to One Million. Your students need to be able to understand place value for multi-digit numbers. It's an excellent review to see if your students are ready to tackle manipulation of seven and eight digit numbers.

Place Value to One Million

Learning how to write numbers in standard form, word form and expanded form is not only a standard, CC.4.NBT.2, but also a needed real world skill.

In a number, each group of three digits separated by a comma is called a "period." Each period has hundreds, tens and ones. Once your students master that one little fact, it repeats over and over and over and over.... you get the picture, and with a little humor they will get it too. Over and over and over and over... hahahaha :)

We use place value to read and write numbers with these periods in place.
Standard Form: 616,966
Word Form: six hundred sixteen thousand, nine hundred sixty-six
Expanded Form: 600,000 + 16,000 + 900 + 66

Then, taking it up a step, students need to be able to take these large numbers and compare them, hopefully without mixing up the place values or being tricked by 542,678 compared to 542,768.

Teaching them to make a quick chart is one more thing that your fourth graders can add to their tool box of math tricks.
You can demonstrate it on the board or with your overhead camera with the following examples.

Are You Getting Ready to Teach Even and Odd Numbers in Second Grade?

Most second graders start the year reviewing odd and even numbers. Especially if your district uses Go Math, Odd and Even Numbers are the first lesson in chapter one.

Ways to Teach & Spiral Odd and Even Numbers
When I taught kindergarten, every morning we sang Hello, Hi There from Shari Sloane's School is Cool album as part of our morning calendar. When she says "find a partner near you," I stop the music and let them pair up.

We then quickly discuss that we have an EVEN number of students and everyone has a partner. Then we continue on with our routine.
BUT THEN... when we have some absent, on a day when we have an ODD number of students, we stop and I will be someone's partner. We quickly discuss that ONE was left over, etc.

After a few days of an ODD number of students they become wise to my ways and EVERYONE wants to be the one left over so they can be my partner. So then I teach them that one group will have three students, one group will have an ODD number and we can roll on for the rest of the year. It really clicks with my Kinders, and by exposing them to ODD and EVEN every.single.day, HOPEFULLY, they will be ready to roll in second grade for your review.

Teach & Spiral Odd and Even Numbers

While we are learning our numbers, we are also learning to take them apart, to decompose them. Math standards state that kindergartners need to show how any number 1-10 can be created using a variety of addends. This daily calendar activity is perfect.

Every day during calendar I place one more red "cookie" in the tens frame on the board to represent the number of SCHOOL DAYS we've been in school that month. Then we chant while I point to the cookies, "One cookie for Mrs. Smith, one cookie for me." Discussing how we have an even number of cookies for the party or one left over!

I like to also expand this lesson daily for my higher level students, to expose them to fractions. On the odd days, the cookie left over can be split into two halves, two parts, and we are all happy because in our little party of two people, life is fair and equal again.

This is what it looks like as we pass the tenth day of school in a month....

Which is perfect because we also have to learn to decompose numbers into their tens and ones!

As the school year rolls on, to keep this fun and interesting, I teach my helpers to stand at the board and point, some months the helper will say, "A cookie for Mrs. Smith, a cookie for me." Other months they can pick a friend and say, "A cookie for Suzie, a cookie for me." Then they know to finish up the lesson asking the class, is it an odd number or even number. It's adorable y'all! It seriously doesn't get old and they love it.

Even if you teach first, second or third, it is a great song to start your Morning Meeting with and to build new friends in your classroom! Enjoy! :)

There are many ways to use this Even and Odd Center Games Resource, here are a few of my favorite ways:

Use one page as a game board, cut the other page. Place all those cards face down. Have the students turn over one card at a time, solve and place face up on the board. If they are incorrect, the card returns to the bottom of the pile. The winner is the student who places the final card. OR, for a "no winner" version, the goal is for the students to solve the cards independently, but to completely cover the board together. This version can ALSO be played many ways. One way is with the answer page as the game board, another way is with the math problem page as the game board instead. With three sets of cards, you can have multiple ways to play with the game board style.
You can also play this game with cutting all the cards and matching up the problems with the solutions.
For movement, place the problem cards around the room and the student(s) have to solve the math problem and leave the correct answer card at that location. Have a second student check the answers to extend the game.
Mix all the cards together, with two students, deal 5 cards to each student and then place the remaining cards face down. Use as a Go Fish card game!
Lay all the cards upside down on the floor and use as a Concentration (some call it Memory) Game!

Lessons For Teaching "Use the Break Apart Strategy to Add"

Breaking a 2-digit or larger number apart, or ungrouping the number, is a strategy that helps students see the value in place value. The tens place is not just a 4. It’s value is 40 or 4 tens. The more mental math tips that students have in their tool kit of skills, the easiest each step of the harder math skills become!

Now back to the Break Apart Lesson Ideas... One of the best ways to each this strategy is with base ten blocks. I teach my students a "banking method" I'm taking a ten and I'm going to the bank and returning with 10 ones. It is a lot of fun to model it in the beginning, taking your ten piece and walking over to another table to trade it out for 10 ones. Later as they are practicing and reviewing this skill by themselves, it is wonderful to hear, "I'm taking these three hundreds to the bank..."

I like base ten blocks that are all one color, that way the students don't get confused with trading "red" for "green" instead of the skill of trading ones for tens. The above picture is a wonderful set at Amazon that are magnetic for your board or an independent center.

Base Ten Starter Kit

Students can roll their dice at the same time and the winner is the one with highest number. They can play to ten points, or if you have a few minutes before lunch or dismissal, play the lightening round... winner needs two wins. By having the students check each other's dice, there is more mental math going on in a short period of time.

Page One - A cover page stating "Use the Break Apart Strategy to Add" that can be used for a cover sheet for your file folder in your files. It can also be a folder cover for your students, give them a file folder with this cover and they can keep all the student sheets in the file folder to work on during math centers, morning work, or as a fast finisher activity. You can take a large piece of construction paper, 12 inches X 18 inches, fold it in half and use that as a "File Folder" to hold your students' work too.
One of my favorite uses for this cover page is to use it as a workbook cover and staple the other six pages with it, perfect for a Fast Finisher book!

There are many ways to use this 3rd Grade Go Math 1.6 Use the Break Apart Strategy to Add Center Games Resource, here are a few of my favorite ways:

Use one page as a game board, cut the other page. Place all those cards face down. Have the students turn over one card at a time, solve and place face up on the board. If they are incorrect, the card returns to the bottom of the pile. The winner is the student who places the final card. OR, for a "no winner" version, the goal is for the students to solve the cards independently, but to completely cover the board together. This version can ALSO be played two ways. One way is with the answer page as the game board, another way is with the math problem page as the game board instead.

You can also play this game with cutting all the cards and matching up the problems with the solutions.

For movement, place the problem cards around the room and the student(s) have to solve the math problem and leave the correct answer card at that location. Have a second student check the answers to extend the game.

Mix all the cards together, with two students, deal 5 cards to each student and then place the remaining cards face down. Use as a Go Fish card game!

Lay all the cards upside down on the floor and use as a Concentration (some call it Memory) Game!

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.5 - Fluently add and subtract within 5.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.A.1 - Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.B.4 - Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem. For example, subtract 10 - 8 by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.5 - Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6 - Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on, making ten, decomposing a number leading to a ten, using the relationship between addition and subtraction, and creating equivalent but easier or known sums.

Ways to Use the Different Pages:
* Vocabulary Definitions Page {7 words or 13 words} Send this page home in your students’ take-home folder to study at both home and school. If you use a
separate Science Folder at school, use a second copy as a page to keep in their
Science Folder. You can also set your printer / copier setting to “two to a page” so
that you can give your students half a page with the complete vocabulary for home
and the other half of the page for their Science Folder or their Science Interactive
Notebook.

* Write the Definitions Page {7 words or 13 words} Use this page at home or in
class with the Vocabulary Definition Page for the students to write and reinforce
what each definition is for the vocabulary word. Depending on their ability, they
can also use the word in a sentence or complete a “quick draw example” of the
word in the real world.

* Answer Keys for the Write the Definitions Pages In addition to your use, you
can post the answer key at your Science Center and/or Literacy Center to be a
guide to complete the assignment or a student self-checking page when they have
completed the definitions. You can also leave it for a Substitute Teacher day for
your Sub to check the students’ answers.

* Match the Definitions Page {7 words or 13 words} This page comes in two
versions, ABC order, and mixed order, for both the 7 words lesson and the 13
words lesson. Use the easier ABC order as a quick pre-test and the mixed order
as a post test. These pages can also be used as seat work and/or homework too.
Answer Keys for the Match the Definitions Pages In addition to your use, you
can post the answer key at your Science Center and/or Literacy Center to be a
guide to complete the assignment or a student self-checking page when they have
completed the definitions. You can also leave it for a Substitute Teacher day for
your Sub to check the students’ answers.

* Study Cards Print and laminate for your Science and/or Literacy Center so that
your students can use these cards to fill out their “Write the Definitions” pages.
Your students can also use them as flash cards alone or with each other, by
holding their hand over the definition. Place these cards around the room so that
your students can use a clip board and “Walk the Room” or “Read the Room” to
find each card and write the definition on the included Study Cards Recording
Sheets. These cards can also be printed in black and white for the students to
keep a set at home and a set in their Science Folder {if the cost of colored ink is a
concern.}

* Study Cards Recording Sheets Print the first page with the seven answer areas
for the students only studying the main seven words and print the first page and
the second page back-to-back for your students that are studying all thirteen
words. You can also give your students one page on one day, and the second
page on another day if they need their lessons broken down into smaller,
manageable parts.

* The I Have, Who Has? Game Cards!
* Teacher Direction Sheet A how to page for you to teach your students how to
play I Have, Who Has? Games. You can also use this with a parent volunteer or
paraprofessional to review the vocabulary with 4 – 6 students in a small group.
This game, with the teacher directions included, are also great for an
EMERGENCY SUB TUB!

* Teacher Answer Key Sheet This page is to keep the game moving so that you
can tell what answer comes next, I also recommend letting one student be the
“teacher” so that they can help the game continue to move forward while you, the
teacher, can get a few minutes of work done. PERFECT for the end of the day
when you have students waiting for walker / car rider / bus dismissal
announcements.

* The I Have, Who Has? Game Cards Print, laminate, cut out and use year after
year!

* Match Game Cards I love these cards and the multiple uses you can have with
them, year after year, class after class! Print, laminate, cut out and then you can
use these cards with your students for playing “Match Game” also known as
“Concentration”. Place each card face down, and then take turns turning over two
cards at a time. If the student selects the word with the correct definition, they get
to keep the two cards. The winner ends the game with the most matching sets of
cards. This is a great game that one student can play as a way of reading and
reviewing the vocabulary words and definitions. Print a set for each student to play
Concentration at home with their family to continue to reinforce these vocabulary
words! For more fun, use one dice. Before the student’s turn, roll the one dice to
see how many turns you get. Roll a 1, you get one turn, but roll a 6, and you’re in
luck with getting 6 turns!

* Match Game Cards Recording Sheets I have placed the Study Cards Recording
Sheets with the Match Game Cards for ease of printing. These recording sheets
work will with these cards too!
